Research conducted by an innovative Scottish Higher Education project funded by SLIC has featured in an international library and information journal.

The study led by the University of Strathclyde was funded through the Innovation and Development Fund and features in the latest edition of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Journal.

The paper entitled ‘LIS sector’s contributions to climate action: Indicators for measuring success’ reports on current climate-based activities being undertaken in Scottish libraries as well as frameworks which could be introduced to record such activity.

Scottish LIS Research

As part of the IDF project, a survey was conducted throughout Scottish public and school libraries to gather data. The survey revealed a variety of activities being undertaken for achieving and promoting sustainability, especially towards Sustainable Development Goal 13: Climate Action. However, many of the activities were not being recorded or reported properly because of the lack of a recording and reporting mechanism and tool. The research proposes two simple templates for recording and reporting library activities that contribute towards Sustainable Goal 13 as well as measures for recording outcomes and impact.

The project was developed in partnership with the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals in Scotland (CILIPS) who also funded the venture through their Research Fund. Although further testing of the proposed templates is needed, it is expected the paper will trigger further research and further professional development of the LIS sector’s contributions towards sustainability and climate change.
