The National Year of Reading 2026 is a UK-wide campaign led by the National Literacy Trust to address the steep decline in reading amongst, children, young people and adults. In 2026 it’s time to Go All In and rediscover the joy of reading.
The Scottish Library and Information Council is a proud partner of the national campaign – committed to promoting universal access to reading and its long-term benefits. By engaging with new audiences and encouraging more people to read for pleasure, we hope to make reading a more visible and meaningful part of our collective culture.
Supporting Our Members
Throughout 2026 we will be supporting the National Year of Reading through our ongoing projects. This includes our Every Child A Library Member initiative which streamlines the library joining process for children across Scotland. Annual celebrations such as Mobile Libraries Day 2026 will also highlight the importance of supporting more remote readers in gaining regular access to books and resources. Crucially, we will help our members to engage with their communities in what libraries do best – champion reading, reading for pleasure, literacy and attainment.
The Why Reading Matters Toolkit (provided by core delivery lead The Reading Agency) will support our members in delivering and supporting public library engagement. The Toolkit will include resources such as print and digital materials to help Scottish public library services Go All In and promote the National Year of Reading 2026.
Working together, our goal is to help Scottish library and information services celebrate a momentous year which amplifies the joy of reading for everyone.
The Go All In website has lots of resources and ideas on how you can get involved in the National Year of Reading. If you would like more information on how we can support you during the National Year of Reading please email info@scottishlibraries.org
