About SLIC

The Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) is the independent advisory body to the Scottish Government for library and information matters. Its membership includes all 32 local authorities, 15 Universities and the 14 Further Education Colleges as well as the NHS and special interest libraries.

Advocacy for the library sector as a whole and the constituent parts of the library and information industry is core to the work which SLIC undertakes. SLIC administers the Scottish Government’s Public Library Improvement Fund (PLIF) and the School Library Improvement Fund (SLIF).

Over recent years the output from the organisation has expanded to include the development and implementation of national strategies for public and school libraries. The profile of the work undertaken by SLIC has increased significantly and many work packages have appeared in the Scottish Government’s Programme for Work.

Specification

SLIC is looking to appoint a supplier which can support all its Media and Public Relations activity. The successful applicant will be charged with ensuring messaging around the work which SLIC carries out is positively profiled in the media and ensure a clear positive message with target groups.

The list below is indicative of the range of duties which SLIC is looking for the successful applicant to undertake.

  • Maintain and develop a positive brand image for SLIC
  • Be first point of contact for media enquiries
  • Seek opportunities to raise the profile of Libraries and SLIC within the media through the development of compelling stories using the range of media channels which best suit the target audience
  • Develop and implement Communications Strategies around major initiatives
  • Produce ideas driven promotional initiatives, including films, as required
  • To maximise awareness of innovative projects funded by the organisation / Scottish Government.
  • Develop innovative marketing campaigns as required to assist building audience for libraries
  • Develop and produce digital, social media and blogger relations

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate working to tight deadlines, be able to turnaround copy at short notice and have an ability to respond to media enquires as required 24/7.

Over the course of the calendar year, SLIC has certain anchor events which require media and PR Support such as Strategy development and milestones, AGM, Board Recruitment, regular events with Keynote speakers. In addition, there are a number of innovative projects which SLIC will want to showcase in the media such as the support of projects funded in public and school libraries.

Where SLIC is delivering Scottish Government related activities, the successful supplier will be required to liaise with Scottish Government PR colleagues.
