A new round of the School Library Improvement Fund (SLIF) will open in January offering schools and nurseries a share of £170,000. Introduced in 2017, SLIF has already had an enormous impact on school library services throughout the country.
The Fund supports creative and innovative projects within the school library sector and is available to all state schools, including nursery providers, in Scotland. SLIF is a fantastic opportunity for schools who would like to improve their current library offer. The fund is not designed to create new school libraries but rather enhance what is already there. Any potential project must also be of demonstrable value and have an impact on the development of school library and information services.
Primary schools, Secondary schools and nurseries across Scotland have already benefited from the scheme, which SLIC administers on behalf of the Scottish Government. Previously successful projects have included Health & Wellbeing initiatives, the creation of writing festivals and mentoring schemes.
The Fund plays a key role in helping schools achieve the strategic aims of Vibrant Libraries, Thriving Schools: A National Strategy for School Libraries in Scotland 2018-2023, the strategic document for the development of school libraries in Scotland.
You can apply to the School Library Improvement Fund by downloading the SLIF Application Form and the SLIF Guidance Form. Every application must come through the Key Contact for Schools in your area. It is very important that your form is signed by your Key Contact, as this confirms your application has been vetted and approved, ready for consideration.
SLIC only accepts two individual applications per local authority and the SLIF application process is designed to ensure we do not receive multiple bids. You can read more on the SLIF application process – including what constitutes a collaborative bid - by visiting our SLIF funding page and our SLIF FAQ.
You can also learn more about previous SLIF projects by visiting our SLIF Awards page. Here you will find details of SLIF projects from nurseries, primary and secondary schools throughout Scotland.
Applications close on 3rd February 2020 with successful applicants informed by Monday 24th February.
