A new photography exhibition illustrating the rich diversity of Scotland’s population is set to go on tour in public libraries this September.

The portrait exhibition will feature images of 20 people that were captured for the opening titles of the BBC Scotland channel’s flagship news programme, The Nine

For the creation of The Nine’s title sequence when the new channel launched in February 2019, BBC Scotland commissioned 15 photographers across Scotland to capture the diverse range of people who make up the country’s population.  Over 200 photos were taken of 70 different subjects at home, at work and out and about on the streets over a period of six months.

Twenty of the photographs will appear in eight libraries from 3nd September 2019 to 23rd January 2020 as part of a travelling exhibition that will visit Ayr, Whitburn, Strathaven, Dunblane, Glasgow, Broxburn, Edinburgh and Elgin.

The exhibition will also offer an opportunity for nominations of people with an interesting story to appear in The Nine’s next title sequence.

SLIC & BBC Scotland Partnership

The library exhibition has been developed as part of a unique partnership agreement between the Scottish Library and Information Council and BBC Scotland

The editor of The Nine, Hayley Valentine, said she was delighted that the programme’s iconic photographs can be studied in more detail across the country.

“Many people have told us how striking they have found these fantastic photographs, which come from right across Scotland, so it’s great that the work of these photographers will now be taken to libraries across the country,” she said.

Pamela Tulloch, chief executive, SLIC said: “Public libraries are at the heart of our communities and are accessible to everyone, making them the perfect place to host this wonderful exhibition.  It’s further demonstration of the range of activities on offer in modern libraries.  Among the books and reading, you will find a host of cultural events and exhibitions like this one, as well as computer coding classes for children, PC and wifi facilities, jobseeker support and small business hubs.  There’s something for everyone and lots of reasons to visit your local library.”
