The Scottish Library and Information Council (SLIC) is the independent advisory body to the Scottish Government on library and information services.

Our role is to support and promote the role of library services, including public libraries, school libraries and further and higher education libraries, in the social and economic development of Scotland’s communities. We work with library services to improve the quality of library provision through funding, training and quality assurance frameworks and evaluation tools.

We also work in partnership with other organisations to provide a number of services to help people make the most of Scotland’s information.

These include Find a Book and Let’s Get Online.

We are funded through Scottish Government funding, member subscriptions and contributions from the National Library of Scotland.

Our aims

  • Provide a leadership focus for Scottish library and information services and to facilitate coordination on a national level
  • Promote understanding of library and information sector’s contribution to the life of the nation
  • Monitor standards of provision of library and information services and advocate the development required for their continuing vitality
  • Advise the Scottish Government and ministers on all matters concerning library and information services
