In 2017 SLIC’ Code Club Project trained over 150 public library staff from 31 Scottish public library services in the basics of two coding languages – Scratch and Python.
The project was made possible through Scotland’s Digital Xtra Fund which is itself funded by the Scottish Government Digital Scotland Business Excellence Partnership.
Special one-day training sessions were organised throughout the country with up to five members of staff from each participating local authority attending. SLIC partnered with Code Club Scotland to coordinate the programme of training.
The training equipped library staff with the essential skills needed to deliver their own Code Club programme within their library service. Today, nearly all of Scotland’s public library services run Code Clubs aimed at children aged between nine and 11.
The project linked directly with the strategic aims of Ambition & Opportunity – Scotland’s first public library strategy published in 2015.
