Scotland’s public libraries are embracing their role in sustainable living with initiatives like the Wee Green Library Van leading the way.

The eco-friendly electric van supports library services in East Dunbartonshire and was the brainchild of East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture Trust. The van regularly takes books to primary schools and groups, supporting reading, music and other group sessions. It also supports the general work of local libraries, for example, moving books between branches to fulfil customer requests.

The colourful van was funded via the Scottish Government Covid Relief Fund which was administered by the Scottish Library and Information Council. The initiative relates directly to Forward: Scotland’s Public Library Strategy 2021-2025 which sees sustainability as a crucial element in cementing the future of Scotland’s public libraries.

Jim Neill, Chair of EDLC Trust, added: "The van is focused on children and families, and is helping to strengthen our local networks – working with schools and partners in community venues. Using an electric vehicle also demonstrates our commitment to the environment and reducing our carbon footprint.

"It will boost our support for local activities – increasing the number of people and communities we can reach. The response has been great so far and we're looking forward to continuing to spread the word."
