The Scottish Library and Information Council has joined forces with the Scottish Government and Road Safety Scotland (part of Transport Scotland) to raise awareness of an innovative road safety app for young children in Scotland.
Klang: The Road Home is aimed at children between eight and 11-years-old – one of the most vulnerable age groups when it comes to pedestrian casualties on Scotland’s roads. Many injuries happen because their capacity to make judgements regarding speed and distance are not yet fully developed.
The app teaches children about the importance of road safety through the story of Klang the alien, who has crash landed in a small fictional Scottish town. Unaware of how roads and cars work, it’s up to the player to guide the main character back home safely, navigating various road safety obstacles along the way.
From today, Scotland’s public libraries will be encouraging children, parents and teachers to download the app and interact with a wealth of resources available to reinforce the importance of road safety. They will also be running a wordsearch competition.
Pamela Tulloch, Chief Executive Officer at Scottish Library and Information Council, said: “We’re really pleased to team up with the Scottish Government and Road Safety Scotland to encourage children throughout Scotland to download Klang. Educating children is something we feel strongly about at SLIC and road safety is an extremely important topic.
“All our libraries across Scotland offer free public WiFi and have staff on hand to assist library users to get online, so we’ll definitely be encouraging any parents or younger people who visit us to try it out.”
Minister for Transport and Islands, Humza Yousaf, said: “This is a great way of using a fun and engaging tool to teach young people important safety skills that they will carry with them throughout their lives.
“Any steps we can take towards reducing child pedestrian casualties in Scotland are extremely worthwhile, and by targeting kids at this young age using the gaming medium, the message will really resonate with them.”
Klang: The Road Home is available for iPhone, iPad and Android and is free to download from the Google Play and the Apple App store.
