This week our Funding and Events Manager Lorna Watt talks about the upcoming events on the SLIC calendar before she embarks on a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Southeast Asia.
It’s hard to believe we are more than half way through the year already!
Autumn is usually a very busy period for us in the SLIC office and planning has already been in full swing for several events we have coming up.
I have been working with Publishing Scotland on our joint Publishing and Libraries Day, which is happening on the 14th September. This is a great opportunity for librarians and publishers to meet, network and find out what new titles are coming out. We are grateful to both Bertrams Library Services and Bolinda Publishing who have helped sponsor this event.
It has already proved very popular and bookings were coming in thick and fast within minutes of the booking process opening. Well done East Renfrewshire Libraries on being quick off the mark and booking the very first place.
Another date to note for your diary is Friday the 10th November, when we will be holding our annual Showcase and AGM. Last year we were at the fabulous Scotch Whisky Experience in Edinburgh. This was definitely one of my most favourite venues to date, the staff were brilliant and the food delicious. And did you know that under the whisky barrel podium there’s an ample array of distilled beverages, should any speaker need to calm their nerves?!
This year we are off to the CCA in Glasgow, where there will be an emphasis on film. As some of you will know, SLIC have been running a film education in libraries project over the past year. This project has proven to be highly successful as well as motivational for library staff. There will be an opportunity to hear from several of the libraries who have been running various film projects in their library services. One of our recently funded IDF projects at the University of the West of Scotland will also be showing a film on the 'Information Literacy Journey' that students make as they go through their programme of study.
Talking of information literacy, just one week later, on Friday the 17th November, we will be holding our third Information Literacy event, kindly hosted by the Scottish Government in Edinburgh. If you attended last year, you will know why this is such a highly anticipated event. Who could forget the entertaining (and slightly scary!) 'Meet The Hackers' presentation that had us all rushing off to change our passwords?
Look out for booking information on the website and social media in September for both the Showcase and Information Literacy events.
P.S I’ve had to be more organized than usual at work, as I’m packing my trusty rucksack and heading off travelling around South-East Asia for the month of August. I’m really looking forward to the trip and I’m sure I will manage to visit a few libraries along the way. I’ll be back in touch in September!
